Appealing to the inner child

More than 100 science and nature designs

Our colorful, thematic designs inspire curiosity and are ideal for stores with an orientation toward science and natural history education. Their appeal extends deeper then the surface image which is why we left the post-consumer cereal box material visible on the reverse. Your visitors will surely find them fun and educational. If they are not buying for themselves, they will think hard about someone else in their lives and whether or not their ears are pierced.

They do receive great comments! Our business inspiration is to create a product that meshes well with the education missions of museums, nature centers, and refuge visitor centers. We also like the idea that the resale revenue goes to supporting such institutions when sold in their gift shops and book stores. Look here for a list of current retail locations.

Original Artwork

We create our own colorful, detailed designs. Subjects are chosen and artfully rendered to celebrate curiosity and the wondrous diversity of our world. A playful style speaks to the inner child in people of all ages.

A Cottage Industry

We began Jabebo Earrings in 1995 based on our idea of making earrings out of miniaturized images. For each design we make a die that fits its outline so it is possible to cut them out accurately. We still work out of our house with the help of 5 part time employees.

Follow our link to About Us at left and at the bottom of this page to learn more about us.

Educational

Each design features differing but complementary left and right images. Together, they illustrate narrative ideas about our world.

Recycled Material

Post-consumer cereal box cardboard is used to construct the earrings. Print and images from the cardboard packaging is visible on the reverse of the earrings. Two layers of cardboard are sandwiched together to provide a sturdy base for the color image applied on the front.

The display cards are also made from cereal box cardboard which are sprayed with water based latex paint. On many cards a circle is left unpainted so that some graphics of the original packaging show through. We also often use the reverse side of the cereal box leaving the original graphics intact on the opposite side. After they are prepared, we send most of our cards to United States Business Card Co. for printing. USBC Co. uses old fashion hand operated letter presses which can print on material that does not go through the typical computer printer. You may check out there website if you are interested in business cards made from cereal boxes.

Light Weight and Surgical Steel Hangers

Being made from paper, the earrings are light weight and comfortable to wear. Ear nuts to keep them from slipping out are provided. They are hung on surgical steel French hangers with ear nuts to help keep them from getting lost.

Shellac protects from Sun and Water

The earrings are coated with Platina dewaxed shellac providing durability and resistance to water. They will survive the occasional drenching; be it a shower, rain storm, or a sudden jump into a pool. Just be sure it does not last more then a few minutes and they have a chance to dry out. Although, shellac has the historical reputation for discoloring when exposed to water, the improved dewaxed products are more resistant to this. Shellac is also resistant to UV light which eliminates the yellowing effect over time and protects the colors in the earrings images. We like the following two reasons best: it is a natural and renewable product, and it has an interesting natural history resulting from interactions between the lac insect and their tree hosts. Shellac does get soft in high heat so if you were to leave a set of earrings touching each other in a hot car they my stick together. If you wish to learn more about shellac please visit Shellac Shack which is our source for this product.

History

Jabebo Earrings began in 1995 after developing a technique of reproducing small miniature images that can be displayed from earring wires. It quickly became our primary creative outlet as they won praise among our scientist and teacher friends. The first stores that carried them were at nature centers and refuge visitor centers in the Washington DC area where we lived at the time. Today we are still a cottage industry working out of our home. All our earrings are made from beginning to end on our premises. To learn more about us please visit About Us.
