Kevin Abbott's Portfolio and Exhibit Work

Bellefonte Museum for Centre County

100 Years of Fantastic Plastic opened April 9 with a colorful collection of celluloid, baklite, and pop culture items from the turn of the century through the 60's. This exhibit was produced by an all volunteer team. Kevin designed and fabricated the interactives shown here. The tiping bottle demonstrates how cellulose nitrate, the precursor to synthetic plastic, was accidentally discovered when a cotton rag was used to clean up a nitric acid spill. The 2nd interactive demonstrats some touchable examples of early celluloid. In the third you can discover how celluloid billard balls and other plastic products reduced the demand for ivory.

Kevin was the Exhibit Coordinator and Education Specialist for the Hands On Science Center at the National Museum of American History from 2000 to 2004. In addition to keeping the center in working order he contributed to new and redeveloped exhibits such as "Radioactivity Around Us", "Buckyball Hands-on Workshop", "Exploring the Frontier" and "Electricity Past and Present."

Other Artwork

The Following series in plaster and tinted plastic resin is based on salt extraction pools, or salterns, from the ancient salt mines of Teguidda-n-Tessoumt, Niger. The use of these pools date back to ancient times when salt was highly valuable. Salt is extacted from animal manure and dessert soil in a several stage process accounting for for the variety of colors and dimensions of the pools.
